(Photo by Marcus Brandt / POOL / AFP) Photo by  AFP – NATO behind Ukraine – NATO on Sunday, May 15, pledged open-ended military support for Ukraine, as Finland hailed its “historic” bid to join the alliance and Sweden’s ruling party said it backed a joint membership application. The promise came after Finland jettisoned decades of military non-alignment, redrawing the balance of power in Europe and angering the Kremlin. On the ground in Ukraine, Russia announced air strikes in the east and in Lviv in the west as Western intelligence predicted its campaign in eastern Ukraine would stall amid heavy losses and fierce resistance. At a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Berlin, Germany’s Annalena Baerbock said it would provide military assistance “for as long as Ukraine n...

Russia equates EU with NATO as equally hostile threats

Image
In an interview with British online magazine UnHerd, First Deputy Representative of Russia to the UN Dmitry Polyanskiy   has said   that Russia no longer sees a difference between NATO and the EU, which is why it opposes Kyiv’s EU membership bid. Commenting on the plans of Finland and Sweden to join NATO, Polyanskiy said that it would turn them overnight from neutral into enemy countries. “They know that the moment they become members of NATO it will imply certain mirror moves on the Russian side,” he said. “If there are NATO detachments in those territories, these territories would become a target — or a possible target — for a strike.” At the same time, their membership in the Alliance is, according to Polyanskiy, not a huge blow to the security of Russia, with the diplomat insisting that this will be the worst solution for them, not for Russia. “Russia is ready to face NATO threats, Russia has made the necessary precautions for this. It doesn’t change very much ...

Image
Team photos before kick off between FC Basel and Dynamo Kyiv on May 4. (https://fcdynamo.com/) Dynamo Kyiv wrapped up their peace tour of football matches undefeated, beating Swiss team FC Basel 3-2 in the Match for Peace in Switzerland. The game was played at Parc Saint-Jacques on the evening of Wednesday, May 4. But the main thing in this European tour and this match was taking place elsewhere. I was fortunate to have been invited to this superb event. The stadium was decked out with signs against the war and Ukrainian flags were in abundance. Radiant children in red and white and blue and yellow were present, with mothers holding Ukrainian flags and their children in their arms. It was a nice atmosphere. I don’t know a thing about football. It was my first time at a stadium to see a match. The evening was magical for many Ukrainians and for me too because this friendly match between FC Basel and Dynamo Kyiv meant a lot of people could forget the war in Ukraine for an hour and ...
